This bear was filmed in Yellowstone National Park, specifically in Hayden Valley in early September 2022. This time of year, bears are in hyperphagia, meaning they are trying to eat as much as possible and gain as much weight as possible in preparation for hibernation. As you can see, this grizzly bear is already pretty heavy, but his goal is to get even bigger to increase his chances of surviving the harsh Yellowstone winter.
If you look closely, you can see this bear "huffing". This is a common behavior in bears, and by doing this they can smell food in the air. Grizzly Bears have an extremely strong sense of smell - they can smell a carcass up to 20km away. This bear is probably smelling a bison carcass that was about 1km away.
When bears emerge from the den after hibernating for the winter, they are ready to roll around in the show - or at least this mother was! After up to 6 months in the den, they may also be looking for ways to scratch themselves, as this helps to remove any excess dirt or extra fur.
Frustrated Mother
The baby bears are out of the den! The COYs, or Cubs of the Year will stay with their mom for 2-3 years. This mother sure has some hard work ahead of her.
